How to Dress for Winter Without Looking Like the Michelin Man (January Reader Challenge Winner Post!)

Thanks to Kelly Z., who challenged us this month to teach all of you how to dress for winter without looking like the Michelin Man!

Since most of us don't feel our slimmest self in the winter anyway, it's really easy to feel huge under all of those bulky winter clothes. With this topic in mind, Princess and I thought about how we dress for winter to look cute but keep warm.

What we found most of all is that it's all about the layering...and how you layer. Thin layers under something thicker will make you warm, cozy and svelte!

As you all know, Princess LOVES a warm, cozy sweater in the winter. But, with anything warm and cozy, you run the risk of looking too bulky. So, Princess' solution? Wear slim fitting pants with a cozy sweater. Wear tights under your pants--they don't add any bulk to the outfit, but they do keep the warmth in! Under your sweater, you can wear a tank, camisole or t-shirt--again, doesn't add bulk, but does add warmth. In order to keep your skin safe from the damaging winter weather, tuck your pants into tall boots--with a pair of nice warm socks!

Here is Princess' outfit:

In case you guys forgot, I'm a HUGE fan of tights. I love how they can add a pop of color to an outfit (super important in the dreary winter months) and how they keep your legs warm! For me, a great "keep-warm-look-sleek" outfit is a fitted sweater dress, tights and tall boots. Under the dress, you can wear a long sleeve shirt, short sleeve shirt, tank top or camisole to help keep you warm. The tights will keep your legs warm, and the boots will keep your legs even warmer. I prefer to wear boots that come almost up to the knee or over the knee--that way most of your legs are covered by the dress and by the boots--keeping you as warm as can be! You can also wear a pair of socks under your boots, which will keep your toes nice and toasty (or toes-ty...ok, that was lame!).

Here's my outfit:

On top of the outfit, to keep warm while outside...and still retain your girlish figure, we both suggested a warm winter coat--but one that is shaped, like a belted coat or a nice peacoat, a soft knit scarf, a pair of great gloves or mittens, and a hat. (Princess has a super cool pair of mittens--the top flips down leaving your fingers free for texting, then flips back up to keep your hands warm!) This combo will be sure to keep you warm!

Us in our outerwear:

Since everything we are wearing is from our actual closets, we put together some great options to help you recreate these outfits. If you click on the words next to the photo, they will take you to the actual item so you can add it to your wardrobe!

What We're Obsessed With Now: Bauble Bar

For those of you who are long time followers of TAL, you may remember one of our earliest posts in which Princess talked about her love of an amazing accessories site called eight1six. (Original post here!)

Since that post was written, eight1six became BaubleBar. As the name changed, the site grew. As the site grew, our obsession with it grew as well. (Did you really think that Princess wasn't going to convince me to hop on the bandwagon of a great accessories site?!)

The site sends you emails nearly every day about their new collections--the prices range from super affordable (our favorites!) to somewhat expensive (which bargain hunters like us shy away from). But, the quality is top notch and the jewels are beautiful.Without fail, when I wear a BaubleBar piece, I get compliments all day. I'm sure Princess would tell you the same thing!

Since the site has grown over the past year, there are two new additions that I particularly love...the buried bauble and the Vault. Each Friday, BaubleBar has a "buried bauble"--if you find it, you can snag it for just $10! It is limited to one per person in each color (so if it comes in 3 colors, you can get all 3 for $10 each!). We have found a few great finds through the buried bauble! The Vault is a great incentive...you earn points to the Vault by inviting friends, having friends purchase, and purchasing goods yourself. When you earn enough points, you can redeem them for free jewelry! The free pieces start at 5 points and go up from there. As you all know...the only thing better than getting a good bargain is getting something for free!

But, the absolute best part about BaubleBar? These pieces look far, far more expensive than they are--which means you get a great bang for your buck, whether you find a little sparkle for yourself or a great gift for a friend.

Over the past year, our BaubleBar collection has grown and we'd love to share our finds with you!

Dear Cupid (Or What Valentine's Day Gifts We'd Like to See!)

Dear Cupid,

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and Princess and I have been such good girls lately that we were hoping that you could help us with what our hearts are coveting...

Maybe you can put that arrow of yours to good use...and shoot it at the people we love (who might buy us pretty things for Valentine's Day), with this list attached, of course?

Since we're girls on a budget, we don't want our sweeties breaking the bank. So, these goodies are wallet friendly!

Nothing says "aphrodisiac" more than a sweet smell...so we are coveting this delicious perfume from Sarah Jessica Parker. It smells like strawberries, honeysuckle, mandarin, gardenia, rum and sandalwood...and it is AMAZING! $35.00 is a small price to pay to smell so darn good! You can find this at a number of retailers, but we found it at Kohl's.

It isn't a Valentine's Day without some gorgeous red roses. But, these roses in particular are what caught our attention! These red roses are not only beautiful, they are everlasting. These rose earrings are stylish, timeless and sexy! Cupid, please tell our sweeties to run to Bauble Bar and get these earrings...because at $38 they certainly won't be around for long!

There is nothing like coming home to a house filled with love...and that is why we absolutely adore this adorable keychain. If we were to see this on our key ring, we'd feel warm and fuzzy all over each day, every day! Nothing says affection like giving us something we will use all the time that will keep reminding us of how sweet you are. We found this one at ebay for $12.99...now THAT'S love!

This little travel bag is perfect for Valentine's Day...it's adorned with lovebirds! Besides, there are few things as romantic as a weekend away with your significant other. This pretty, glittery travel bag is the perfect gift...because it hints at lots of fun trips to come...and lots of great memories to make together! You can find it at Francesca's Collection for $16.00.

Lace is the fabric of love--it's sweet, dainty and pretty. Which is why this beautiful scarf from Banana Republic is a must have! This Valentine's Day gift would be the perfect addition to our outfits for Valentine's Day dinner...and maybe we could find other fun uses for it (wink, wink!). It's a great wardrobe addition at $59.50...a timeless staple!

We love this bag. Which means we would love you even more than we already do if you bought us this bag. It is so cute...and the fringe screams "fun night with my love out on the town, but still sophisticated enough to take to work!" This adorable bag from Francesca's Collection is an absolute steal at $48.00. (Which means you can buy us this bag and still get us some of the other great goodies on our list...to fill the bag with!)

This gorgeous necklace is on our must have list. It has vintage appeal with modern styling--a perfect topper for any date night outfit! It looks super expensive, so all of your friends will think that you're spoiling your girl, when really you will have gotten a steal by going to Bauble Bar and spending only $48!

And, sweetie, if you're in the mood to REALLY spoil us and splurge, this bag from Coach would look great on our shoulders. This luxurious pink leather is sweet, supple and just plain sassy. We love the shape and style of the bag--and, although it comes in numerous colors, what color is better for Valentine's Day than pink? This bag is definitely a budget buster at $398, but...can you really put a price on love?

Thanks Cupid for delivering this letter. We'll be sure to let you know which of these fabulous gifts come our way on Valentine's Day!

XOXO,

Budget & Princess

Book of the Month

I am an avid reader. I devour books like they're air. During the summer, I literally read a minimum of one book a day. Unfortunately, during the school year, I don't have as much time to read; however, I still try to get in as many books as I can. Sometimes I come across a book that I want to tell the whole world about. To me, books like this are like accessories for the brain...they make your brain prettier...prettier with knowledge!

Therefore, I have decided to start a new feature here at The Accessorized Life...The Book of the Month!

Each month we will be featuring a new read that we want to share with the world. (Princess is an avid reader too, so I'm sure she'll have plenty of fabulous selections to share as well!)

My first selection is a book called Graveminder by Melissa Marr. Melissa Marr is a young adult author--Graveminder is her first book written for adults. I found the book because it was suggested to me through goodreads. (If you are not a member of goodreads, you should be...especially if you love to read!) goodreads is a website where you can chronicle and review all the books you read. You can also link up with friends who have goodreads accounts--check out what's on their "bookshelves," what they gave good or bad reviews to, or what they recommend. goodreads also generates recommendations for you based on the books you read and the reviews you've written. But, I digress...

Back to Graveminder:

So, the book is based in a small town called Claysville. In Claysville, the residents have made a deal with death to keep their town and its residents safe. In return, the residents must mind the graves of the dead--or the dead will walk. I know...it sounds super creepy. But, I promise you, it's not. Graveminder actually a really intriguing story--mystery, science-fiction, a tale of family and a love story all rolled into one. Kind of like chick-lit meets thriller...on steroids.

Once I picked up this book, I literally could not put it down. I read the book any time I had a few seconds to spare...sometimes I'd even pick it up and read it when I was in the middle of conversations with people. Yup, it was that good.

So, Graveminder by Melissa Marr is my book pick of the month! Hopefully it's inspired you to read it as well.

(If you click on anywhere it says Graveminder, it will take you directly to the book on amazon.com. If you click where it says goodreads, it will take you right to the site!)

Have any great book recommendations to share? Did you read Graveminder and want to share your thoughts with us? Did you join goodreads and want to become our friend? Email us at theaccessorizedlife@gmail.com!

The Daily Shoe: Part 2

2/4/12
Nine West
Circa 2010

Well, friends...sadly, it's that time again. For me, summer has drawn to a close and I am back at school.

Since it wouldn't be a new school year without my annual tradition of wearing different pairs of shoes each day until I can't do it anymore, I felt I couldn't leave all of you high and dry without my new daily shoe roster! (Plus, it totally helps me to keep track of which shoes I've worn...)

Some of these shoes will be brand new to you (while not brand new to me...), some will be brand new for both of us and some will be repeats from last year. (But, don't worry...I'll take all new photos!) In case you forgot how this works...I will be taking pictures of my shoes that I wear to work every day until I repeat. Sometimes, I'll even include some of my fabulous shoes from the weekend--but the caption under those shoes will be in a different color.

Last school year I
made it until the end of January...let's see if I can beat (or at least meet!) that this year. (As I said at the close of the original "Daily Shoe", any and all shoe donations are welcome. I prefer heels (in case you haven't noticed!) and I wear a size 5...nice subtle hint, right?)

So, without further ado, here we go! Hope you enjoy the Daily Shoe: Part 2!

If you have any great shoe bargains to share or you want to mail me a fabulous pair of size 5s (hee hee hee), email us at The Accessorized Life: theaccessorizedlife@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
